OVERVIEW
The Department of Paediatrics is housed in a specific building near the MCH hospital of PGIMER & Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar. The spectrum of healthy and sick children reaching this department for clinical care provides the students with unparalleled opportunities to learn and serve. Problem solving and research are central to the academic programs in the department. The daily out-patient attendance averages around 250-300. The pediatric ward has 70 beds with always more than 100% occupancy. The Pediatric ICU has 6 beds and has ventilator facility and provides all critical care services including peritoneal dialysis. The department has a teaching program for postgraduate (M.D. Paediatrics) students with 4 seats starting from the academic year 2022-23. Research on health issues with a crying need at the regional and national level is the priority of the department. The department is committed to improve child health care through excellence in patient care, teaching and research. Poster/oral presentations of the research work done by residents and faculties are routinely presented in many regional/ national conferences.
Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU):
Inaugurated in February, 2009 with support from Govt. of Odisha, UNICEF, Norway India Partnership Initiative (NIPI) and National Health Mission (NHM), Odisha, it has received Level-II-A accreditation by National Neonatology Forum (NNF) on May, 2015. This 36 bedded facility provides services like Phototherapy, exchange transfusion, ROP screening, hearing screening, transcranial ultrasonography, developmental assessment, anthropometry and Bubble CPAP. Managed regularly by 5 Pediatrics specialists, 2 Medical Officers and 21 Staff Nurses, it has received IANN (Indian Association of Neonatal Nursing) award at New Delhi in 2010, at Kolkata in 2011 and at Pune in 2012. Having 4 publications in reputed International Journals and winning various NNF quiz competitions in 2013, 2014 and 2016, the SNCU at PGIMER & Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar conducts various training programs and observership programs under IAP, NHM, IMNCI and FBNC.
Day Care Centre:
The Day Care Centre is 21 bedded facility functioning 24×7 and providing special services like Blood and blood product transfusion for Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Disease patients and Recombinant Factor Concentrate transfusion for Haemophilia patients. These services are provided with help of dedicated medical officers and nursing officers.
District Early Intervention Centre (DEIC):
The DEIC provides special services like physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, hearing and ophthalmology screening and evaluation and caters to patients not only from Khurda, but also patients from all over the state.
Nutritional Rehabilitation Centre (NRC):
The NRC, in association with Sishubhawan, Bhubaneswar provided special nutritional rehabilitation services to various malnourished children coming to this institute. Children attending the OPD and admitted to IPD of PGIMER & Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar are regularly assessed anthropometrically and screened for malnutrition. Those requiring nutritional rehabilitation are managed at the NRC.
Comprehensive Lactation Management Centre (CLMC):
In a first of its kind initiative in the state, the PGIMER & Capital hospital has a human milk bank at its pediatric unit. This is the 34th CLMC in the country. Lactating mothers are regularly provided counselling services and those willing to donate are provided all the necessary support and assistance. As of 31st August, 2022, 1888 mothers had donated milk to our Human Milk Bank which undergoes thorough pasteurization and storage and utilized for sick neonates admitted to SNCU with mothers having lactation failure.
