Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar, was started in the year 1954, with only 60 beds. Its capacity increased over time to 750 beds with all modern amenities and facilities, catering to 10-12 lakhs of people of 7-8 districts of Odisha.  Being the largest peripheral hospital of the state of Odisha, situated in the capital city of Bhubaneswar, the State Government decided to establish a Post Graduate Institute in this hospital.

This standalone Post Graduate Institute, without an undergraduate course, was named as ‘Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research and Capital Hospital’ (PGIMER and CH) on 28.04.2021. Prof. Dr. Nibedita Pani, Professor, Anaesthesiology, joined as The Director of this institute on 02.06.2022.

This institute has been granted by the NMC to offer Post Graduate courses in 6 clinical departments, which include General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Respiratory Medicine, and Orthopaedics, to be started in 2022-23.
